This document provides help for the following topics as they pertain to the Michigan Catholic Conference website: accessibility, browser recommendations, and RSS feeds (a.k.a. “news” or “web” feeds). Accessibility Information
The MCC website is designed to be accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities and those using assistive technologies or other alternative browsing environments. The sections below describe just some of our accessibility enhancements.
Access Keys
Most modern web browsers support access keys — keyboard shortcuts for interacting with a website. The table below describes how to use them in various browsers. If you are already familiar their use, skip ahead to a list of our access keys.
| Platform | Web Browser(s) | Access Key Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Firefox, Mozilla Suite, Netscape | Alt + [access key] |
| Windows | Internet Explorer | Alt + [access key], Enter |
| Windows | Opera | Shift + Esc, [access key] |
| Mac OS | Camino, Firefox, Mozilla Suite, Netscape, Safari | Ctrl + [access key] |
| Mac OS | Internet Explorer | Ctrl + [access key], Enter |
| Mac OS | Opera | Shift + Esc, [access key] |
| Linux | Galeon, Konqueror, Mozilla Suite | Alt + [access key] |
| Linux | Opera | Shift + Esc, [access key] |
Please note that access keys are individually defined by each website you visit (if at all), and will almost certainly vary from one to the next. The following access keys are defined for most pages on the MCC website:
- 1 — Go to our “Home” page
- 2 — Go to our “Contact” page
- 3 — Go to our “Site Map”
- 4 — Go to our “Help” page
- 5 — Shift focus to the “Search” box
- 8 — Go to our “Terms of Use”
- 9 — Go to our “Privacy Policy”
- 0 — Jump to “Accessibility Information” on our “Help” page
Resizable Text
The text on most pages of the MCC website is fully resizable. To do so, adjust the default text size in your web browser by selecting the “View” menu, then select “Text Size,” “Text Zoom,” or “Zoom” (as appropriate) and choose your preferred setting.
Printer-friendly Pages
Most pages on the MCC website are designed to be as printer-friendly as possible. When printed, unnecessary elements (such as background images and the navigation) are automatically removed, and the text is reformatted to increase legibility.
Text-only Navigation Aids
Users of text-only browsers such as Lynx or Links will notice additional navigation aids at the top of each page, providing quick access to our “Home,” “Search,” and “Help” pages. Netscape, Mozilla Suite, and Opera users can also take advantage of this feature. In Netscape and Mozilla Suite, select the “View” menu, then select “Show/Hide » Site Navigation Bar” and choose “Show Only As Needed” or “Show Always.” In Opera, simply select “View » Toolbars » Navigation bar.”
Additional Information
Please note that there is often no definitive way to test a website for accessibility — “accessible” can become a judgement call. The use of third-party plugins and software may also result in some content the accessibility of which is beyond our control. If you have any problems accessing information on our website, please contact us via email at mccupdates@micatholicconference.org.
Browser Recommendations
Web standards help make websites more accessible. Upgrading your web browser to one that supports these standards will help ensure websites such as ours look and function the way they were intended. If the following message appears near the top of any page on the MCC website, consider upgrading your browser to meet our minimum recommendations:
Accessible to any web browser or internet device, this website will work best in those that support web standards.
The following table describes our minimum browser recommendations, and provides links to upgrade information:
| Web Browser | Version | Platform(s) | Upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camino | 0.5 (or higher) | Mac OS | Visit website |
| Firefox | 0.6.1 (or higher) | Windows, Mac OS, Linux | Visit website |
| Internet Explorer | 5.0 (or higher) | Windows | Visit website |
| Konqueror | 3.0.5 (or higher) | Linux | Visit website |
| Mozilla Suite | 1.0.2 (or higher) | Windows, Mac OS, Linux | Visit website |
| Netscape | 6.01 (or higher) | Windows, Mac OS, Linux | Visit website |
| OmniWeb | 4.5 (or higher) | Mac OS | Visit website |
| Opera | 6.03 (or higher) | Windows, Mac OS, Linux | Visit website |
| Safari | 1.0.3 (or higher) | Mac OS | Visit website |
Please note that while the table above lists many browsers currently being developed for the Windows, Macintosh, and Linux platforms, it is by no means exhaustive. Additionally, certain browsers may need to be purchased, either seperately or as part of an operating system. In some cases, free upgrades may or many not be available.
Finally, please note that the Michigan Catholic Conference does not provide any support for upgrading your browser, nor are we responsible for any information loss or training issues that arise as a result of upgrading.
RSS Feed Information
The MCC offers the following RSS feeds:
Additional Information
Our RSS feeds provide a simple, fast way for you to be informed of when new content has been published to our website. If you're new to RSS feeds (also known as “news” or “web” feeds), you'll probably need to download a newsreader application (popular ones include FeedReader for Windows and NetNewsWire Lite for Mac) or visit an online aggregator such as Bloglines. Your web browser or email client may also include support for handling RSS feeds.
Copy and paste the URL for one of our feeds into the “subscribe” dialogue of your newsreader or aggregator, which will then be able to periodically download the feed and inform you of any updates. For more (technical) information on RSS feeds, please read this Wikipedia article, or, for a much more exhaustive list of newsreaders, try this one.
